DIY Earphone Holder

DIY Earphone Holder: Free Tutorial

You know that feeling when you haven't used your earphones in a while and you then find that they are all tangled up? To make sure that doesn't happen ever again you need a special pouch to keep the cables tidy. Our DIY earphone holder tutorial is just the thing! It shows you each step in pictures and it is really simple, and even suitable for beginners.

You can choose any colours you like. This circle zip earbud pouch also makes a great present for a loved one. Our free tutorial is quick and easy, and will help keep things tidy in your bag, suitcase or drawers.

What size should the sewn earphone bag be?

When sewing a round earphone bag you need to make sure that it isn’t too small. The ideal size is approx. ∅ 10 cm.

Does the earphone case need to be padded?

The earphone pouch should be padded with a soft inner lining to protect the earbuds from scratches and damage.

How do you pad the earbud pouch?

A round earphone pouch is padded with 2 pieces of fabric and a piece of Vlieseline H640.

You will need the following for your diy earbud holder:

  • Scraps of two different fabrics - one for the outside, one for the lining
  • Interfacing, 12 x 24 cm - we used Vlieseline H640, but you can of course use the volume fleece of your choice
  • Continuous zipper, 15 cm
  • Zipper pull in matching colour
  • Sewing thread
  • Own logo label

Instructions

First cut your fabrics to size. You will need two circles measuring 12 cm in diameter from each fabric and from the fleece, as well as a rectangle measuring 5 x 10 cm from the lining fabric. Cut one circle per colour in half and one fleece circle. This is where your zip will go later. Iron the fleece circles and half circles onto the wrong side of your outer fabric as per the manufacturer's instructions.

Now sew on the zip - first place a half circle of lining right side up, then your zip right side up, then an outer fabric half circle right side down (see picture). You can use double-sided tape to hold all the layers in place. Then sew everything together with a 0.5cm seam allowance. Repeat the same on the other side of the zipper with the other half circles, and then remove the fleece from the seam with a pair of sharp scissors. Press all layers away from the zip and topstitch close to the edge. Lastly, slide the pull tag onto the zipper - this can be a little tricky, but eventually you'll get the hang of it.

Now sew the zip tabs. To do this, fold the rectangle in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, and iron the fold. Unfold the tabs and fold both edges towards the middle line. Iron again and topstitch close to the edge. The tab should now measure 2.5 x 10 cm. Halve the tab so that you have two 2.5 x 5 cm pieces and fold each piece in half again so that they end up measuring 2.5 x 2.5 cm.

Attach your logo label to one of the tabs so that it can later be sewn into the earphone pouch.

Finally, sew all the circles together. Don't forget to undo the zip, otherwise you'll be annoyed later! Stack the circles together as shown in the picture - first the lining circle with the right side down, then the outer fabric circle with the right side up, and lastly the circle with the zip with the right side down. Sew the circles together with a seam allowance of 0.75 cm.
Then trim the edges (cut off the long ends of the zip) and tidy them up with either with an overlock or a zigzag stitch.

Turn the bag inside out through the zip, put in your earbuds and you're ready to go!
