Step-by-step tutorial: How to make a box out of cardboard

Do you need to wrap your gift last-minute or want to thank your guests for a wonderful party? Then grab some cardboard and make this simple yet beautiful box out of cardboard. This kind of packaging is also called a pillow box and is ideal for wrapping vouchers, money or sweets. Just attach some unique swing tags and stickers to these boxes and turn them into a very special gift that is guaranteed to bring a smile to its recipient’s face.

Our box is 15 cm long and 7 cm wide but you can change the dimensions to meet your needs: If you want to make a larger or smaller box out of cardboard, simply scale the dimensions we offer here accordingly. 

Material for a box out of cardboard:

  • Cardboard or scrapbook paper
  • Double-sided tape
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • One cup
  • Bone folder, if needed
  • Decorative ribbon, e.g. string
  • Unique swing tags and stickers from Wunderlabel

You don’t need to print out a pattern for the DIY project “How to make a box out of cardboard“.

First, grab a piece of scrapbook paper or cardboard and cut it into a square measuring 15 x 15 cm. Then, draw in the lines as shown in the picture below. The margin will later become the glue tab. Cut off the corners as depicted in the picture.

Now you need a cup with a diameter of ca. 8 cm. You can also use a bigger cup: The smaller the diameter, the larger the folded curve ends up being.

Place the cup on the edge of the piece of paper so that the curve of the cup touches both corners (see picture below) and use a bone folder (or a ruler or any other kind of sharper object; just be sure not to perforate the paper) to trace along the curve of the cup.

Do this step 4 times until all curved sides are folded. Then, fold the piece of paper along the center line and along the line of the glue tab and, if necessary, press down a bit more on the folded lines.

Next, seal the box by putting double-sided tape or a little bit of glue onto the glue tab.

Now, simply fold the curves together and there you have your very own box out of cardboard! It might help if you make small incisions at the ends of the center line in order to get the box to shut better.
