Everything you need to know about Sewing Journals

Everything you need to know about Sewing Journals

There have been so many times that I’ve wanted to recreate a dress or skirt that I loved so much it was worn out. Each time it was back to the drawing board, measuring out the different fabrics I needed and gathering all the supplies.  It was always trial and error trying to figure out the best way to make my old look new again.

Everything you need to know about Sewing Journals

Then I came across the idea of a sewing journal which was absolute genius.  A sewing journal allows you to keep track of everything you used to make an unforgettable item you’d love to make again.  It’s also a wonderful way to record your history with sewing; where you’ve been and where you’re going!   You can write down every detail of your project such as the type and amount of fabric used as well as where you purchased it, sewing machine settings, measurements and so much more.  You can also use a sewing journal as a sketch book, putting drawings of that skirt you’re dying to make along with fabric ideas together to create in the future.

By keeping record of everything you used to make a great dress or pair of shorts, when you decide to go back and recreate any look, you save so much time knowing everything you’ll need!  This is also a good way to keep track of the measurements of friends and family you may sew clothes for as well as their favorite fabrics.  It’s such a perfect way to organize and allows you to even make surprise gifts because you already have all the information you need logged in your journal.  I also recommend writing down the time spent on each project so you can see how much you improve each time you make it.

Everything you need to know about Sewing Journals

You can create your own sewing journal by simply buying a notebook, but there are also endless options if you want to buy one online.  You can find them at bookstores, sewing shops or you can get a printable pdf template online.  You can also make your own with pockets so you can include fabric swatches, buttons or other embellishments, or even patterns you may want to use.  Adding photos is a great idea so you will always remember how the original piece looked.

Sewing journals are an amazing way to collect all your hard work and wonderful memories in one place.  It’s also a cherished keepsake you can pass down to the family member in your life that loves sewing and creating as much as you!
