SEO stands for search engine optimization, which is the art of making your website appear higher in a search engine so that it can get more traffic. While most people think of Google when they hear SEO, optimizing your Etsy store for performance within Etsy is just as important.

HERE ARE SEVEN SIMPLE STEPS YOU CAN USE TO IMPROVE YOUR ETSY SEO AND GET MORE CUSTOMERS

Step #1 Find The Right Keywords

  • Think from a buyer`s perspective: What would they type in to find your product?
  • Use Etsy`s search bar: Type in your product keyword and write down all the suggested keywords that come up which might be relevant to your product
  • Look at how your top competitors structure their shops
  • Use Google`s Keyword Planner to see what terms people search for in Google

Step #2 Optimize Your Listing Title

  • Your listing title is the most important factor in Etsy-make use of all the 140 characters it allows
  • But don`t just stuff it with keywords! Your title should be keyword rich but your human readers come first
  • Long tail keywords (search terms with 3 or more words) are easier to rank for than short tail keywords
  • Great photos lead to more clicks and ultimately to more sales on Etsy!

Step #3 Optimize Your Product Description

  • Use the exact search phrase you are targeting for your product in the first 100 characters of your product description, title, and tags
  • Write descriptions that SELL, not merely describe. What are the benefits, not the features, of the product? Illustrate through compelling storytelling
  • In general, the longer your product description the better!

Step #4 Optimize Your Images

  • Use all 5 image spots allotted for each listing, as each image carries an alt tag that tells search engines what it is about and also showcases your product
  • Don’t be cheap! Spring for a professional to take pictures of your product in an appealing setting
  • Take action shots of your product being used

Step #5 Love Your Customers (& Get Reviews)

  • Positive reviews, completed about pages and store policies are a (smaller) factor in getting ranked
  • Always keep your target audience in mind– Solicit feedback from them, and never put SEO in front of a positive customer experience

Step #6 Test Test Test

  • Unlike other search engines, Etsy updates constantly, meaning that changes to your listing can have an immediate effect on rankings. Make changes to your listing, evaluate the results, do it again

Step #7 Optimize For Google

  • Use Google’s Keyword Planner to find terms that people search for in Google. Ideally you’ll be targeting a term that has high search volume in both Etsy and Google
  • Put your most important search term in the first 60 characters of your listing title, as Google will ignore the words that come after this
  • The shop announcement you define on Etsy serves as the meta description that search engines use. Ensure that the first 160 characters cover your relevant keywords while also encouraging potential customers to click through to your listing
